Benefits of VPN and VPS

May 13, 2012 in Blog by Brittney Harmon  |  Comments Off on Benefits of VPN and VPS

A hosting company can create a “time-share” with a Virtual Private Server (VPS) service. Although a VPS runs in software on the same physical computer as other customers’ virtual machines, it is in many respects functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer. A VPS is dedicated to the individual customer’s needs, has the privacy of a separate physical computer, and can be configured to run server software.

A hosting company can connect your home office to other regional offices with a Virtual Private Networking (VPN) service. A VPN extends a private network and the resources contained in the network across public networks like the Internet. It enables a host computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were a private network with all the functionality, security and management policies of the private network. This is done by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of dedicated connections, encryption, or a combination of the two.

One benefit using VPS is a VPS hosting account is less expensive than a full dedicated hosting plan that uses a physical server. Clients have the same technical support as with shared hosting for most issues. A client can choose from semi managed hosting where the web host handles some maintenance and fully managed services.

Another benefit is many VPS hosting plans are easily scalable. A client can start off in your virtual environment with the minimum amount of resources you need and then as you grow gradually increase your hosting plan to accommodate your needs.

Lastly, a client has a lot more control over your virtual server than you do with shared hosting. A client will likely have root access and the ability to use scripts that may not be allowed in the shared hosting environment.

One benefit using VPN is a client can use private, secured hardware to do the same things a client would do with a VPN. However, private hardware solutions cost many times what a client would spend on setting up and maintaining a VPN.

VPNs enable mobile employees, telecommuters, business partners and others to take advantage of locally available, high-speed broadband access to gain access to the company’s network. Additionally, high-speed broadband links offer a cost-effective method for connecting remote offices.
